MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631095389 A) filed by Mahima Misti Sarkar; Swarnendu Roy; and Nirmali Gogoi on August 06, 2026, for A Hybrid Slow-Release Nano-Fertilizer Comprising Alginate-Coated Silica Nanoparticles And Fruit Waste-Derived Biochar.

Inventors include Mahima Misti Sarkar; Swarnendu Roy; and Nirmali Gogoi.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a hybrid slow-release nano-fertilizer composition comprising silica nanoparticles synthesised by a sol-gel process and biochar derived from fruit-processing waste, encapsulated within an alginate polymer matrix in a plurality of tunable weight ratios, namely 100 AS, 75AS:25AB, 50AS:50AB, 25AS:75AB, and 100AB. A process for preparing the composition, comprising dissolving sodium alginate, admixing the silica nanoparticles and biochar, stirring, centrifuging, casting the mixture dropwise, and drying, is disclosed. The composition provides controlled and sustained release of silicon, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and potassium nutrients over an extended time period. A method of applying the composition to crop plants, such as rice and lentil, is further disclosed, wherein the composition mitigates salinity stress by improving net photosynthetic rate and related attributes, reducing reactive oxygen species accumulation, preserving membrane integrity, and enhancing yield parameters, particularly at the 100 AS and 75AS:25AB ratios, thereby providing a sustainable, waste-valorising, and industrially scalable fertilizer solution for saline and non-saline agricultural conditions.
