MUMBAI, India, July 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641077316 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Ramapuram Campus on June 23, 2026, for A Hybrid Image Encryption Scheme Based On Cellular Automata And Rsa.

Inventors include Karthikeyan G; Arulprakasam R; and Dhanalakshmi S.

The application for the patent was published on July 03, 2026, under issue no. 27/2026.

Abstract: Field of the Invention The invention is related to secure and exactly reversible encryption of digital images for storage and transmission. More specifically, it deals with a hybrid image encryption scheme where cellular automata (discrete parallel systems described by local rules that generate complex pseudo-random patterns) are driven by seeds obtained from an image hash encryption- Using RSA, which produces sequences dependent on the key for pixel rearrangement and keystream masking. The scheme applies to both grayscale and RGB images. Background of the Invention Digital images are often distributed and stored in networks and shared platforms where confidentiality is needed. In comparison to text data, images are larger in size and have a high correlation between neighboring pixels, which may reveal structure if encryption is not designed to destroy spatial dependence and intensity. Cellular Automata (CA) are discrete parallel models that are locally governed. They describe state transitions through cells that evolve according to current values and neighboring values. This invention applies CA token currents to produce deterministic and key- dependent sequences that control two processes of image encryption: • Pixel scrambling (to destroy spatial structure), and • Keystream masking (to randomize byte values while maintaining reversibility). The system is applicable to both grayscale and RGB images, with complete reversibility using the same secret key generated from an RSA-encrypted hash.
