Abstract: The present invention relates to a green and controlled method for synthesis of novel heterocyclic compounds using a catalytic reaction platform. The method comprises selecting a first reactant having an electrophilic functional group and a second reactant having a heteroatom-containing nucleophilic functional group, preparing a reaction mixture with a solvent system and catalytic system, forming an intermediate by condensation, and cyclising the intermediate to obtain a heterocyclic compound. The catalytic system may include organic acids, inorganic acids, Lewis acids, bases, ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, supported catalysts, or recyclable heterogeneous catalysts. The method may be carried out in water, ethanol, aqueous ethanol, glycerol, polyethylene glycol, or solvent-minimised conditions. The invention enables synthesis of nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulphur-containing heterocycles such as pyrazoles, imidazoles, oxazoles, thiazoles, triazoles, pyrimidines, benzoxazoles, benzothiazoles, benzimidazoles, and derivatives thereof with improved yield, selectivity, simplified purification, reduced hazardous solvent use, and better scalability.
