Abstract: A system (100) for reconstructing historical biome maps from archived literary and textual data, comprising: a textual archive input unit (102), a text preprocessing unit (104), a geographical entity identification unit (106), an ecological information extraction unit (108), a historical context analysis unit (110), a geospatial referencing unit (112), a biome classification unit (114). The textual archive input unit (102) receives archived literary and textual data, the text preprocessing unit (104) preprocesses the received textual data, the geographical entity identification unit (106) identifies geographical entities, the ecological information extraction unit (108) extracts ecological attributes, the historical context analysis unit (110) determines historical and contextual information, the geospatial referencing unit (112) associates the extracted information with geographical coordinates or spatial regions, the biome classification unit (114). The invention facilitates systematic reconstruction of historical biome distributions from archived textual evidence. The invention promotes spatially referenced representation of historical ecological information for historical environmental analysis.
