Abstract: Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for building five-layer scientific citation knowledge graphs around a designated seed paper and measuring how semantic relationship types propagate across successive citation generations. Backward layers capture the seed's foundational inheritance; forward layers capture downstream scholarly impact. A direction-aware six-type taxonomy assigns distinct relationship type sets to backward and forward citation edges. A large language model classifies every edge using direction-specific prompts and a hybrid evidence strategy that prioritises citation context sentences. Forward transition matrices are derived from the classified edges, giving conditional probabilities of relationship type succession across citation hops. Backward citation profiles predict dominant forward self- propagation behaviour. A propagation coherence metric enables cross-domain comparison. The invention exposes domain-characteristic propagation signatures in how scholarly influence travels through citation generations patterns invisible to conventional bibliometric analysis.
