MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611087857 A) filed by Graphic Era Deemed To Be University on July 17, 2026, for A Fluorine-Free Silica Sol Coating Composition And Method For Denim-Based Oil-Water Separation.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The invention relates to surface-engineered textile materials for oil-water separation, and particularly to a fluorine-free silica sol coating composition based on nano silica formed by base-catalyzed sol-gel conversion of tetraethoxysilane in ethyl alcohol with ammonium hydroxide at pH 8, followed by successive modification with hexamethyldisilazane and stearic acid in ethanol, and to dip-coating of denim fabric therewith. The modified silica sol, having an average particle size of about 87 nm and a zeta potential of about -54 mV, forms nanosized grains on denim fiber surfaces while retaining the woven structure and interconnected pores, thereby producing hierarchical micro-nano roughness, superhydrophobicity with a static water contact angle of about 151.9°, and superoleophilicity enabling gravity-driven separation. The coated denim fabric separates oils including crude and edible oils from water with efficiencies up to about 99.2%, high flux, and sustained abrasion resistance and cyclic performance.
