Abstract: A method, system, and controller are disclosed for fault-tolerant operation of a multiphase induction motor, particularly applicable to underwater propulsion and industrial multiphase drive systems. The invention continuously monitors stator phase currents, detects and identifies open-phase faults — including single-phase, two- phase adjacent, two-phase non-adjacent, three-phase, and four-phase open-circuit fault conditions — and analytically computes modified phase current magnitudes and phase angles for the remaining healthy stator phases. The modified currents are injected into the healthy phases through a multiphase voltage source inverter controlled by a PWM strategy, producing a substantially forward rotating magnetomotive force while eliminating backward rotating magnetomotive force components. The approach maintains substantially constant electromagnetic torque, reduces torque ripple and pulsations, and ensures uninterrupted motor operation following fault occurrence without requiring any additional hardware, redundant converters, or motor winding modifications. The invention is particularly suited to safety-critical applications including autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), submarine drives, and general industrial multiphase drive systems where continuity of operation under fault conditions is essential.
