MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641085572 A) filed by Sri Venkateswara College Of Engineering on July 13, 2026, for A Dual Pulse Steam Assisted Biotransformation Process For Obtaining Antimicrobial Peptides From Poultry Feather Waste.

Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the biotransformation of keratin-containing poultry feather waste into bioactive antimicrobial peptides and biofertilizers. The process comprises subjecting whole feathers to a dual-pulse steaming pretreatment with cycle 1 at 115°C, 15 min and cycle 2 at 110°, 8 min to disrupt the crystalline keratin structure, followed by solid-state fermentation with a keratinolytic microorganism, Priestia megaterium sds261 (Accession Number: PZ666135), at a pH of about 7.5, a temperature of about 37°C, and a moisture content optimised at about 77%, to obtain a keratin hydrolysate. The hydrolysate is subjected to centrifugation, ammonium sulphate salt precipitation, dialysis, and anion-exchange fast protein liquid chromatography to obtain purified antimicrobial peptides, with a keratin degradation efficiency of up to 87%. The process yields about 100 to 120 mg of antimicrobial peptides and about 2 to 4 litres of a nitrogen-rich liquid biofertilizer per kilogram of feather waste processed. The invention thus provides a sustainable, commercially viable pathway for converting feather waste into pharmaceutical-grade peptides and agricultural inputs.
