Abstract: A transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration and heat pump system is configured for providing refrigeration and useful heating through a common CO2 refrigerant circuit. The system comprises a compressor (101), a gas cooler (102), a heat recovery heat exchanger (103), a high-pressure expansion valve (104), and an evaporator (105). The heat recovery heat exchanger (103) is arranged to transfer thermal energy from a high-temperature portion of the CO2 refrigerant circuit to a heat-transfer medium for utilization by at least one hot application (108). The system is selectively configurable to provide a refrigeration mode, a heat pump mode, or simultaneous cooling and heating through the common CO2 refrigerant circuit. During simultaneous operation, heat is removed from at least one cold application (106) through the evaporator (105), while recovered thermal energy is concurrently supplied to the hot application (108). By utilizing a single integrated system and a common compressor (101), the disclosed arrangement provides both cooling for cold applications and useful heating for hot applications from the same system, thereby reducing the requirement for separate refrigeration and heating units and reducing associated equipment, installation, and operating costs. The disclosed arrangement integrates transcritical CO2 refrigeration, thermal energy recovery, and selectable or simultaneous cooling and heating functions within a single integrated refrigeration and heat pump system.
