Abstract: ABSTRACT A DEVICE HOLLOW FIBER MEMBRANE MODULE FOR HUMIDIFICATION OF BREATHING GASES IN NEONATES [00119] A configurable neonatal respiratory humidifier employs a hollow fiber membrane (HFM) cartridge (100) for rapid, stable humidification of inspired gases in preterm and critically ill newborns during stabilization. Hydrophobic, biocompatible HFM bundles with a counter-current flow between shell-side hot water and dry lumen gas. Transmembrane vapor pressure gradients drive vapor permeation without gas-liquid contact, achieving 90–95% RH and 37°C outlet temperature within five minutes at 1–15 LPM. A first embodiment (200) uses a peristaltic pump (216) circulating hot water from a heated reservoir; a second, pump-free embodiment affixes a flexible silver-carbon printed heater to an aluminum-cased cartridge, reducing size and cost. Modular disposable/reusable medical-grade components ensure patient safety, infection control, and lower per-patient costs. The portable, energy-efficient device with optional battery backup suits delivery rooms, NICUs, neonatal transport, and resource-limited or emergency settings. (FIGURE 1)
