MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641125422 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Dharwad on October 21, 2026, for A Detachable Metadata Serving Module (dmsm) For Enabling Self Identification Of Sensors In Cyber Physical Systems.

Inventors include Vijeth J Kotagi; and Vinay M Talageri.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT A DETACHABLE METADATA SERVING MODULE (DMSM) FOR ENABLING SELF IDENTIFICATION OF SENSORS IN CYBER PHYSICAL SYSTEMS The present invention relates to sensor identification and metadata management in cyber physical systems. A detachable metadata serving module (DMSM) (102, 202) is associated with a legacy sensor (103, 203) or a sensor connection path. The DMSM comprises a non volatile metadata memory (102.1, 202.1), a metadata communication interface (102.2, 202.2), a raw data communication interface (102.3, 202.3), and a sensor coupling structure (102.4, 202.4). The metadata communication interface and the raw data communication interface provide separate communication paths, enabling a host system (101, 201) to retrieve machine readable sensor metadata independently of sensor-data acquisition. The metadata may include sensor identification, manufacturer, model, calibration parameters, operating characteristics, maintenance information, and digital-twin identifiers. The DMSM may operate in passive or active mode and enables sensor replacement while retaining metadata availability without modifying the hardware, firmware, or native communication mechanism of the legacy sensor.
