MUMBAI, India, Sept. 7 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641033718 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology Tiruchirappalli on March 20, 2026, for A Decentralized Autonomous Multi-Intersection Traffic Signal Coordination System For Safe Emergency Vehicle Preemption.
Inventors include Pranav Naath B; Shubham Prasad; and Dr. K Vaishnavi.
The application for the patent was published on September 04, 2026, under issue no. 36/2026.
Abstract: The invention that is being provided facilitates a decentralized autonomous traffic signal coordination system which designed to manage the flow of the traffic across multiple intersections while it also insures safe and efficient emergency vehicle pre-emption. Each intersection operates as an individual and independent embedded control unit which is equipped with vehicle detection sensors, circuits that will condition the circuits, processing logic and the capability of communicating wirelessly. Upon detection of an emergency vehicle at one intersection, a pre-emption request token is generated and transmitted to neighbouring intersections. Each of the receiving intersections evaluates its local conditions which includes the traffic density, pedestrian activity and signal phase status, all this before giving response with an acceptance, timed delay or rejection of the request. The coordinated signal pre-emption is executed only upon successful negotiation, thereby ensuring safety and traffic stability.
