Abstract: ABSTRACT Title of Invention: A cost-effective Bamboo rod included steel reinforced concrete beam The present invention describes the placement/orientation of coated bamboo rods as steel replacement in a double reinforced concrete beam and its effect on various properties of beam. Application of one untreated bamboo rod along with one steel rod in zone of compression (ZoC) and two steel rods in zone of tension (ZoT) resulted comparable beam properties as that of control/ all steel reinforced concrete (SRC) beams, however, water absorption and delignification of bamboo in cement is a concern. Whereas bamboo rod with solvent-free epoxy-based coating (0.5-1.5 mm) resulted in lower water absorption along with retention of intrinsic cellulosic structures of bamboo. Application of coated bamboo rods as replacement of one or two steel rods in ZoC (BSRC-1 and BSRC-3) or replacement of two steel rods in ZoC and one steel rod in ZoT (BSRC-6) resulted in the development of beams with comparable performances as that of SRC beams. Steel replacement with coated bamboo could result in 15.49-47.04% reduction in the costs of reinforcement material per CFT of reinforced concrete beam structures. Fig. 1
