Abstract: The present invention relates to a compostable antimicrobial food packaging film comprising a biodegradable polymer matrix incorporated with bioactive extracts obtained from fruit and vegetable processing waste and a method for its preparation. The bioactive extracts are incorporated into the biodegradable polymer matrix to produce a homogeneous packaging film suitable for food- contact applications. The film exhibits antimicrobial properties that assist in reducing microbial contamination of packaged food products while maintaining the desirable characteristics of biodegradable packaging materials. The invention further promotes the utilization of agricultural and food processing waste as a renewable source of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, thereby contributing to sustainable waste management and environmentally friendly packaging technologies. The compostable packaging film is suitable for packaging a wide range of perishable food products and provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional petroleum- based plastic packaging.
