Abstract: The present invention relates to a metal oxide–biochar composite photocatalyst composition for photocatalytic degradation of organic contaminants in aqueous environments. The composition comprises a biomass-derived carbon precursor, a zinc-containing metal precursor, an aqueous reaction medium, and an alkaline precipitating agent configured to collectively form a metal oxide–biochar composite photocatalyst through hydrothermal synthesis. During preparation, the biomass-derived carbon precursor undergoes carbonization to form a porous biochar matrix while zinc species nucleate and convert into zinc oxide nanoparticles anchored on the carbonaceous surface. The resulting composite structure forms interfacial metal–oxygen–carbon linkages that enhance adsorption capability and photocatalytic activity. The porous biochar support provides a high surface area for contaminant interaction, while the zinc oxide semiconductor phase enables generation of reactive oxygen species under light irradiation. The composite photocatalyst demonstrates effective degradation of antibiotic contaminants in water, thereby providing an environmentally sustainable approach for advanced wastewater treatment applications.
