Abstract: The present invention relates to stabilized nano-zero-valent iron compositions (OPPNZVI) and a method for their biogenic fabrication using orange peel powder extract. The composition comprises a plurality of nanoparticles each having a zero-valent iron core surrounded by a passivating iron oxide/hydroxide layer and an organic shell of oxidized polyphenolic acids and pectin-derived carbohydrate polymers adsorbed via hydrogen bonding and metal coordination, wherein the composition exhibits a specific surface area of about 14.6 m2/g and a zero-valent iron content of at least 25 at. %. The method involves Soxhlet extraction of orange peel powder with water (1:5 w/v) at 70 °C for 7 h, heating a 0.1 M FeCl3 solution at 60 °C, adding the extract dropwise to sequentially reduce Fe3+ to Fe2+ and Fe0, adjusting pH to about 6 with ammonium hydroxide to precipitate nanoparticles, followed by separation, washing, and drying to yield powdered OPPNZVI.
