Abstract: ABSTRACT A CHLOROHYDROXY CURCUMINOID COORDINATION COATING AND PROCESS FOR SIDEROPHORE-TRIGGERED ANTIMICROBIAL RELEASE The present invention relates to a chlorohydroxy curcuminoid coordination coating and a process for siderophore-triggered antimicrobial release. The coating comprises a substrate, a reservoir region containing a first population of chlorohydroxy curcuminoid in a substantially non-ferric-ion-coordinated releasable state, and a coordination-gate region containing a second population reversibly coordinated through Fe(III) junctions. The coordination-gate region restricts premature release from the reservoir under non-trigger conditions. Upon exposure to a microbial siderophore, ferric ions are competitively sequestered from the coordination junctions, thereby reducing gate connectivity and increasing permeability. This simultaneously releases gate-associated curcuminoid and increases release of reservoir- associated curcuminoid to provide an amplified antimicrobial response. The corresponding process comprises substrate preparation, reservoir loading, retention of non- coordinated curcuminoid, gate-forming curcuminoid deposition, Fe(III) coordination, responsive-gate formation, and coating conditioning to obtain the siderophore- responsive coating.
