MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441081606 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education on April 25, 2025, for A Chest Compression System And Method For Respiratory Motion Management During Radiotherapy Treatment.

Abstract: This invention involves a chest compression system for respiratory motion management during radiotherapy treatment comprises a compression belt worn around a patient's thorax or abdomen, a flexible air bladder disposed within the belt, at least one pressure sensor for real-time monitoring of intra-belt air pressure and chest wall displacement, at least one DC air pump for active inflation and deflation of the bladder, a motor driver for pump control via pulse-width modulation signals, and a microcontroller executing a closed- loop control algorithm. The microcontroller continuously tracks the patient's respiratory phase and dynamically adjusts pressure within the flexible air bladder in synchronization with the patient's breathing cycle. By dampening chest wall and abdominal excursion, the system reduces tumor motion during radiotherapy, optimizes tumor localization, and reduces or eliminates the need for manual breath- hold techniques in applicable treatment scenarios (FIG. 3)
