Abstract: ABSTRACT A CARBON-RESPONSIVE REFRIGERATION CONTROL SYSTEM FOR HYDROPONIC CULTIVATION ENVIRONMENTS AND METHOD THEREOF The present invention is directed towards a system and a method relating to carbon-responsiveness in refrigeration controls for hydroponic crop growing conditions. The system includes a sensing apparatus that provides data regarding the canopy condition, the root-zone condition, the refrigeration condition and electricity carbon intensity data, a refrigeration system, a canopy cooling circuit, a root-zone cooling circuit and a controller. The controller provides an indication of the time-varying thermal reserve condition of the canopy and root-zone conditions, provides a number of different capacity allocation configurations, predicts the utilisation of the thermal reserve condition for the configurations, eliminates configurations that have a prediction of constraint violation, provides an indication of the carbon effect of the configurations and selects a cooling capacity allocation configuration for implementation. The refrigeration system then physically re-distributes refrigeration capacity between the canopy cooling circuit and root-zone cooling circuit in accordance with the selected configuration. After the control process, analysis of post control operating data is performed to confirm the thermal response and perform further cooling capacity allocation or recovery operation. Fig. 3
