Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of pharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions, and more particularly to a natural broad-spectrum sunscreen composition comprising a standardized extract of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels fruit for topical application. The invention provides a herbal photoprotective composition containing bioactive phytochemicals including anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, gallic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin, and other polyphenolic compounds that function as natural ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing and antioxidant agents. The standardized extract is prepared by washing, drying, pulverizing, extracting the fruit material with an aqueous alcoholic solvent, filtering, concentrating, and incorporating the extract into a pharmaceutically or cosmetically acceptable carrier to produce topical dosage forms including creams, gels, lotions, serums, sprays, hydrogels, ointments, emulsions, and sticks. The composition provides broad-spectrum protection against ultraviolet-B (UV-B) and ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiation while assisting in the reduction of UV-induced oxidative stress and skin photodamage. The invention further provides a method for preparing the composition and a method for protecting human skin through topical application of the composition. The invention is suitable for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications requiring plant-derived photoprotective formulations with broad-spectrum ultraviolet protection.
