MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611090332 A) filed by Career Point University Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh,; India on July 24, 2026, for A Biopolymer Matrix-Based Controlled-Release Phytochemical Tablet Composition For Protection Of Stored Cereal Grains Against Storage Insect Pests And A Process For Preparation Thereof.

Inventors include Ms. Jyoti Thakur; Mr. Abhay Thakur; and Ms. Sunita Devi.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biopolymer matrix-based controlled-release phytochemical tablet for protecting stored cereal grains against insect infestation. The tablet comprises standardized neem extract (Azadirachta indica), clove essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum), lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon citratus), eucalyptus oil (Eucalyptus globulus) and tulsi extract (Ocimum tenuiflorum) incorporated within a dual biopolymer matrix comprising sodium alginate and chitosan, along with pharmaceutically acceptable excipients. The biopolymer matrix gradually hydrates under ambient storage conditions, enabling sustained and controlled release of volatile phytochemicals to establish an insect-repellent atmosphere without direct contact between the tablet and stored grains. The tablet is prepared by blending, granulation, drying and compression into a stable solid dosage form suitable for placement in grain storage bins, silos, sacks and containers. The invention provides prolonged insect repellency, improved stability of volatile botanical actives, reduced dependence on synthetic fumigants, ease of handling, biodegradability and compatibility with conventional grain storage systems while preserving grain quality during extended storage.
