MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641124750 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on October 19, 2026, for A Biomimetic Multilayer Bioactive Coating With Controlled-Release Natural Preservatives For Post Harvest Protection Of Perishable Agricultural Products.

Inventors include Giriraj Mannayee; Moulika Grandhi; and Ilakkiya.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a biomimetic multi-layered coating system (100) for post-harvest protection of perishable agricultural commodities (102). The coating system (100) comprises an inner biodegradable adhesion layer (103), a controlled-release bioactive layer (104), and an outer hydrophobic barrier layer (105). The inner adhesion layer (103) comprises naturally derived film-forming materials configured to adhere to the surface of the agricultural commodity (102). The controlled-release bioactive layer (104) comprises naturally derived antimicrobial and antioxidative substances encapsulated within a biodegradable carrier to reduce evaporation and migration and provide sustained release during storage. The outer hydrophobic barrier layer (105) comprises a naturally derived hydrophobic material configured to reduce moisture and water-vapor transfer while permitting gas exchange. The outer layer (105) may further comprise biomimetic micro- and/or nanostructures for enhanced water repellency. An optional moisture- and/or pH-responsive component (116) modifies permeability and release characteristics in response to environmental changes. The coating system (100) may be applied by dipping, spraying, brushing, atomisation, or rotary coating and provides improved microbial protection, moisture retention, oxidative stability, and shelf life.
