Abstract: The present invention relates to biodegradable food-packaging biosensors, and more particularly to a multilayer electrochemical and colorimetric biosensor film for detecting meat and fish spoilage. The film comprises a graphene-incorporated polylactic acid or poly L lactic acid layer, a biochar layer, a nanocellulose layer, and an anthocyanin-containing sensing layer arranged in a stacked configuration. The graphene-incorporated polylactic acid or poly L lactic acid layer and the biochar layer provide a conductive transducer path, while the anthocyanin-containing sensing layer, the nanocellulose layer, and the biochar layer provide a headspace- facing analyte access path for volatile spoilage compounds including ammonia, amines, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile basic nitrogen compounds. Exposure to such compounds produces a visible pH-responsive colour change in the anthocyanin-containing sensing layer and a measurable electrochemical response through the biochar layer and the graphene-incorporated polylactic acid or poly L lactic acid layer, thereby enabling package-integrated freshness indication and spoilage monitoring.
