MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641107612 A) filed by Sri Eshwar College Of Engineering on September 07, 2026, for A Bio-Inspired Adaptive Navigation And Obstacle Avoidance System For Autonomous Wheeled Robots.
Inventors include Gokul S; and Thangavel P.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an autonomous wheeled robotic system incorporating a bio-inspired adaptive navigation and obstacle avoidance mechanism for operation in unknown and dynamically changing environments. The system continuously senses the surrounding environment using an ESP32-CAM for visual perception and an ultrasonic sensor for distance based obstacle detection. The acquired environmental information is processed by a navigation mechanism that determines the appropriate movement of the robot based on the detected environmental conditions. When the path is clear, the robot proceeds in a forward direction, while detection of an obstacle within a predefined threshold causes the system to initiate an appropriate avoidance action including stopping or changing direction. The navigation mechanism is configured to imitate natural obstacle avoidance behaviour, thereby enabling adaptive real-time movement and reducing the risk of collision. The generated movement decisions are transmitted to a motor driver for controlling the DC motors mounted on the wheeled platform. The sensing, decision-making and actuation operations are continuously repeated to provide responsive autonomous navigation. The proposed system provides an adaptable, cost-effective and scalable approach for autonomous robotic applications including surveillance, defence, industrial automation and smart mobility systems. The invention demonstrates the effectiveness of bio inspired decision-making combined with real-time environmental sensing for achieving safe and efficient autonomous navigation.
