Abstract: FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the field of water purification and wastewater treatment technologies. More particularly, the invention relates to a bio-derived activated carbon modified cellulose nanofiber composite membrane for the removal of microbial contaminants, especially E. coli, from contaminated water sources. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Water contamination caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichiacoli (E.coli), particularly shiga-toxin producing strains like O157:H7, poses serious health risks including gastrointestinal infections, dehydration, and kidney failure. Conventional water purification techniques such as chlorination, reverse osmosis, UV treatment, and commercial activated carbon filtration are widely used but often involve high operational costs, possible chemical residual toxicity, limited antibacterial efficiency, and reliance on non- renewable materials. Although activated carbon has excellent adsorption capacity, it is commonly produced from coal or petroleum sources, while cellulose nanofibers alone lack strong antimicrobial properties. Therefore, there is a need for a sustainable, low-cost, and environmentally friendly filtration material derived from bio-waste. The present invention addresses this need by developing a composite membrane using activated carbon from dateseeds and cellulose nanofibers from banana pseudostem for efficient and eco- friendly water purification.
