MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541133693 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 30, 2025, for 'wrist-worn drowning detection device.'

Inventor(s) include Abhinav V; Ajay Sriram; Abirami S; and Nathezhtha T.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A wrist-worn drowning detection device (100) integrates a housing (102) as a waterproof casing that incorporates a plurality of sensors (104) to track user-specific motion, physiological, and environmental data. A microcontroller (106) with onboard processors (106-A) and memory (106-C) analyzes this data, comparing it against stored physiological thresholds and historical user data. Upon identifying anomalies indicative of drowning, the device (100) triggers an emergency alert. This alert is transmitted via a wireless communication unit (108) to pre-stored contacts or connected user interfaces (114). Additionally, a local alert system (110) comprising buzzers and LED indicators provides immediate audible and visual warnings to nearby individuals. A dedicated power management system (112) supports continuous, long-duration operation by supplying power to all functional components. This combination of intelligent data analysis, remote connectivity, and local alerting enhances safety in aquatic environments through timely detection and rapid response."
