MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511102894 A) filed by Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab, on Oct. 25, 2025, for 'waste classification system for smart city waste management.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A waste classification system for smart city waste management comprising an image acquisition module 101 configured to capture or receive images of waste materials, a preprocessing and data augmentation module 102 configured to normalize, resize, and augment image data to increase generalization and reduce class imbalance, a deep learning classification module 103 employing a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on a Residual Network (ResNet) architecture, trained to automatically classify waste images into multiple categories including organic, recyclable, and hazardous waste, and an output module configured to provide classification results for integration with automated waste collection and recycling systems, wherein the system enables accurate, automated segregation of waste to support urban sustainability and efficient waste management operations."
