MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541123044 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'virtual air writing system using gesture recognition.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Naga Raja G; Mr. Shaurya Gupta; and Mr. Parth Hiten Bhimani.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a method (100) for virtual air writing using gesture recognition. The method includes capturing video frames from a camera in real-time (104), processing each captured video frame to detect hand landmarks using computer vision algorithms (106), extracting feature data from the detected hand landmarks (110), classifying gestures based on the extracted feature data using a trained machine learning model (112), and generating output including at least one of recognized text characters or system commands based on the classified gestures (114, 116). The method enables touchless interaction with computing devices using standard webcam hardware without requiring specialized depth sensors or motion tracking equipment. The system supports both static gesture recognition using Support Vector Machine classifiers and dynamic gesture recognition using Long Short-Term Memory networks, providing accurate classification of different gesture types based on temporal characteristics."
