MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641044281 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 7, for 'three- head adjustable mouth mirror and retractor system for posterior dental procedures.'
Inventor(s) include Joshitha Subramaniam; Subhabrata Maiti; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The current innovation is a Three-Head Adjustable Mouth Mirror and Retractor System for posterior complex dentistry, such as last molar operations. The traditional method involves different tools, including a really basic mouth mirror for vision and the retractors, resulting in an unstable field of operation and limited visibility of important tooth surfaces, especially the disto-axial walls. The constant need for adjustment of the different instruments results in longer procedures and a dental assistant having to take on a more significant role in maintaining the working area. The integrated instrument suggested is the solution, consisting of a main handle that connects to three arms that can be adjusted independently, each one ending in a mirror head. The two lateral heads serve as Buccal and Lingual Retractors with mirrors that are built-in, giving retraction at the same time and a view of the tooth's axial walls from both sides. The third head at the top provides an important Occlusal View and at the same time acts as a gentle Mouth Opener/Stabilizer. This design is unique in offering an unprecedented system of viewing and retraction that is stable and comprehensive with just one instrument, thus greatly simplifying preparations for last molars."
