MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541084969 A) filed by National Institute Of Technology, Mangaluru, Karnataka, on Sept. 8, 2025, for 'thermo-chemically treated bio-residue as a bitumen extender.'
Inventor(s) include Raviraj H. Mulangi; A U Ravi Shankar; and Yatish R G.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Thermo-chemically Treated Bio-Residue as a Bitumen Extender A Bio-Residue Asphalt Binder (BRAB) comprising; caffeine spent residue (CSR), bitumen VG-40, Zycotherm and Sasobit for sustainable pavements and industrial applications. The Bio-Residue Asphalt Binder (BRAB), wherein the binder is prepared using 30% replacement of conventional bitumen with thermally and chemically treated Caffeine Spent Residue (CSR), facilitated by the incorporation of 4% Sasobit additive. A process of preparing the Bio-Residue Asphalt Binder (BRAB) comprising; (101): Thermochemical pre-treatment of Caffeine Spent Residue, a biowaste produced during the extraction of caffeine from coffee beans and (102): Developing a bio-residue asphalt binder (BRAB) by partially replacing bitumen with treated CSR using sasobit as additive."
