MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541126608 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 14, 2025, for 'system for urban flood detection using satellite data and machine learning.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Jabanjalin Hilda J; Dr. Surendar M; Mr. Rajarshi Chakraborty; Mr. Aritra Ghosh; and Mr. Divya Prakash Singh.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a system for urban flood detection using satellite data and machine learning. The system includes a data acquisition module configured to collect satellite imagery from multiple sources, a preprocessing module configured to process the collected data, a feature extraction module configured to generate features from the processed imagery, a machine learning classification module having a Random Forest classifier trained to distinguish between water-covered and non-water areas based on the features, and an output module configured to generate flood maps displaying detected flood-affected areas. The satellite sources include Synthetic Aperture Radar and optical imagery. The preprocessing module applies different threshold values based on seasonal conditions. The system includes a temporal analysis component configured to distinguish between permanent water bodies and temporary flood zones, and a validation component configured to assess classification accuracy."
