MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541036476 A) filed by Ashok Leyland Limited, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 15, 2025, for 'system and method for uphill and downhill assistance with electronic parking brake control.'
Inventor(s) include Senthilraja V; Ravishankar D; Dr. Vijay Bhooshan Kumar; Balakrishnan D; Dr. Kanakasabapathi Subramanian; and Venkatesh D.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a hill assistance and braking system (10) for vehicles, featuring a control unit (100) that processes vehicle parameters such as engine RPM, speed, accelerator pedal position, and gradient level, and an electronic parking brake unit (200) with a solenoid valve (201) operatively coupled to the control unit (100). The system facilitates uphill assistance by selectively applying full, partial, or releasing brakes utilizing service, parking, auxiliary, regenerative, or endurance brakes based on the parameters to prevent rollback, and downhill assistance by proportionately engaging brakes when vehicle speed exceeds predefined limits, ensuring controlled descent. The solenoid valve (201) is regulated via Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and frequency modulation signals, while control inputs are received through slope sensors, manual switches (101), or CAN signals. The electronic parking brake unit applies partial braking for vehicle speed above 20 km/h downhill or full braking at 0 km/h on gradients. A method for controlling uphill and downhill assistance in commercial vehicles is also provided, utilizing integrated braking and torque control mechanisms."
