The system 100 and method 900 include a driver identification unit 101, a plurality of sensors102, an alcohol detection unit106, a timer unit114, and a control unit104. The plurality of sensors102 monitors at least three vehicle parameters, the alcohol detection unit106 detects an alcohol content in a sample of an authorized driver, and the timer unit114 initiates a plurality of timers. The control unit104 is configured to receive inputs from the alcohol detection unit106, the timer unit114, and the plurality of sensors 102 to determine whether the authorized driver is impaired and allow cranking of a vehicle when a value of each of the at least three vehicle parameters is equal to or less than a threshold value, or a value of the detected alcohol content within the sample is below a threshold alcohol value."
