MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641007341 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 25, for 'system and method for automated splitting of shared dining costs using photograph-based visual cost allocation.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. P. Baskaran; and Ayuishi Singla.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A system for automated splitting of shared dining costs using photograph-based visual cost allocation is provided. The system 100 includes bill-splitting server 106 that interacts with user device 102 to receive dining location and retrieve corresponding menu data. Photograph of dishes on table, captured via user device 102, is processed by object detection model 106A to identify dish objects and generate bounding boxes. Each detected dish is assigned a name, cost, and spatial coordinates by matching against restaurant menu. Dish zones are created by mapping these coordinates into selectable regions. Users can allocate consumption by placing visual identifiers on dish zones or entering consumption values manually. The system 100 computes each user's share by summing allocated dish costs, calculating proportional contributions, and distributing tip and tax accordingly. An itemized breakdown is generated, showing subtotals, tip, tax, and total payable amounts for each user."
