MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641017989 A) filed by Malla Reddy Engineering College For Women; and Malla Reddy University, Hyderabad, Telangana, on Feb. 18, for 'system and method for automated detection and reporting of fake social media profiles using machine learning.'

Inventor(s) include Y. Madhaveelatha; Vaddevolu Divya Vani; Kammara Venkatarangaiah Achari; P V Aparanjini Priyadarsini; Putta Kishorekumar; T. Sanjeeva Rao; T. V. Seshkiran; and Joel Krupakar.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The invention discloses a system and method for detecting and reporting fake social media profiles using machine learning and behavioural analytics. Social networking platforms face increasing threats from fraudulent accounts created for impersonation, phishing, misinformation, and cyberattacks. Existing manual or rule-based methods are inadequate for large-scale detection and fail to address sophisticated, AI-driven fake identities. The proposed system integrates modules for data acquisition, feature extraction, classification, decision making, and reporting. Profile attributes such as account age, posting frequency, linguistic style, friend networks, and image authenticity are analyzed to identify anomalies. Supervised learning models, including Support Vector Machines and Decision Trees, are trained to distinguish genuine accounts from suspicious ones. The decision engine evaluates classifier outputs, assigns risk scores, and flags profiles exceeding defined thresholds. The reporting module automates alerts and generates detailed reports for administrators or moderators, enabling timely corrective action through platform APIs. By combining multi-modal feature analysis with automated reporting, the invention provides a scalable and accurate framework for enhancing digital trust, reducing identity-related threats, and supporting safer online communication across social media platforms."
