MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641008361 A) filed by Dr. A. Yasmin, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 28, for 'sustainable bio-fiber spinning preparatory machine.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Banana pseudo-stem, a major agricultural residue generated after banana harvesting, is often discarded despite its high cellulose content. This biomass contains natural fibres that can be effectively transformed into cotton-like fibres through a sequence of mechanical and chemical processes. The present study focuses on the conversion of banana stem fibres into cottonised fibres and their subsequent spinning into usable thread. The process involves fibre extraction from the banana stem using mechanical decortication, followed by degumming through controlled alkaline treatment to remove lignin, pectin, and hemicellulose. The softened fibres are then subjected to cottonisation, where a combination of mechanical crushing and chemical treatment reduces fibre length and improves softness, making them comparable to natural cotton fibres. Subsequent washing, drying, opening, and carding operations prepare the fibres for spinning. Finally, the cottonised banana fibres are spun into yarn using conventional spinning techniques such as ring spinning or open-end spinning. This technology enables the utilization of agricultural waste to produce eco-friendly, biodegradable, and high-strength textile fibres. The banana cotton thread obtained can be used independently or blended with cotton for the manufacture of fabrics, handloom products, and non-woven materials. The process contributes to sustainable textile production, reduces dependency on conventional cotton, and offers significant economic and employment opportunities in rural and agro-industrial sectors."
