MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122083 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'steel beams with corrugated and honeycomb web patterns.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Abdul Rahim A; and Mr. Karthik S.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a steel beam structure having an I-section configuration with flanges and a web (100), cold-formed steel construction with uniform 1 mm thickness, the web having openings configured to enhance shear resistance and delay local buckling compared to conventional flat webs, and non-prismatic geometry with varying cross-sectional dimensions along beam length, wherein bottom flange width varies from 200 mm at supports to 250 mm at center to optimize material distribution. The openings include hexagonal openings in honeycomb configuration providing enhanced stress distribution and energy absorption, or corrugated pattern with wave-like geometry having alternating peaks and valleys increasing out-of-plane stiffness. The cold-formed steel includes CR5 grade steel conforming to IS 513 specifications having 190 MPa minimum yield strength, 350 MPa minimum ultimate tensile strength, and 200 GPa modulus of elasticity."
