MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631031262 A) filed by Narula Institute Of Technology, Kolkata, West Bengal, on March 16, for 'smart waste segregator.'
Inventor(s) include Sudhangshu Sarkar; Maitrayee Chakrabarty; Bansari Deb Majumder; Suvojit Saha; Vivek Gupta; Anirban Chakraborty; and Swarnabha Nayek.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An automated smart waste segregation system is disclosed, utilizing an Arduino microcontroller to autonomously classify municipal waste into metal, wet, and dry categories. The apparatus employs a suite of sensors, including infrared presence detectors, metal proximity sensors, and moisture transducers, to identify waste characteristics upon entry. Based on sensor data, the microcontroller directs an electromechanical actuator to deposit the waste into one of three specialized compartments. This source-level segregation improves recycling purity, reduces manual labor costs, and enhances public hygiene in smart home and smart city applications."
