MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611050618 A) filed by Pranveer Singh Institute Of Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on April 21, for 'smart shopping cart system.'

Inventor(s) include Ruchi Chaurasiya; Prashant Pal; Gaurav Nishad; Supriya Tripathi; Shoaib Ahmad; and Pulkit Yadav.

The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The Smart Shopping Cart System is an innovative retail automation solution designed to enhance customer experience and reduce billing time in supermarkets and large retail stores. Traditional shopping systems rely heavily on manual barcode scanning at checkout counters, resulting in long queues, increased waiting time, and higher manpower requirements. To address these challenges, the proposed system integrates embedded electronics and automation directly into the shopping cart, enabling real-time billing during the shopping process itself. The system is built around an ESP32 microcontroller and incorporates a barcode scanner for product identification, an OLED display for live billing information, and optional ultrasonic or IR sensors for item verification. When a customer scans a product, its details and price are instantly displayed on the screen and added to the total bill. If an item is removed, the billing amount is automatically updated, ensuring transparency and user control. To further improve usability, the cart includes an autonomous "Follow Me" feature that uses ultrasonic sensing and motor control to maintain a safe distance from the shopper, reducing physical effort during shopping. Additionally, the system supports optional QR-based digital payment, allowing customers to complete checkout directly from the cart without visiting billing counters. Cloud connectivity enables data synchronization for inventory management, purchase analytics, and store administration. Designed with low-cost, easily available hardware, the Smart Shopping Cart System provides a scalable, affordable, and practical alternative to expensive AI-based retail solutions. Overall, the proposed system significantly reduces checkout time, minimizes human intervention, and delivers a seamless, interactive, and efficient shopping experience."
