MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122854 A) filed by Meenakshi Academy Of Higher Education and Research; and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College And Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'smart periosteal elevator with led illumination, sensor-based controls and detachable autoclavable shank.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Aditippriya. B. S; Dr. Nikita Ravi; Dr. Jaideep Mahendra; and Dr. Vijayalakshmi Rajaram.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an illumination-assisted periosteal elevator fabricated for oral, periodontal, implant, and maxillofacial surgical procedures. The device comprises an ergonomic electronic handle incorporating LED illumination at both ends, a touch or proximity-based sensor control, a rechargeable power source, and a charging interface. The handle is connected to interchangeable, fully autoclavable shanks through hermetically sealed detachable joints that maintain mechanical stability and prevent microbial ingress. A first shank terminates in a broad, curved blade for atraumatic soft-tissue reflection, while a second shank incorporates a sharp, narrow blade for precise periosteal elevation in confined surgical spaces. The coaxial alignment of the LEDs with each shank provides focused, shadow-free illumination directly along the working axis, enhancing visibility in deep or minimally accessible regions. The modular structure enables separate sterilization of the shanks while protecting the electronic handle, thereby improving infection control, operator comfort, and surgical precision over conventional periosteal elevators."
