MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541114832 A) filed by Sri Sairam Engineering College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 21, 2025, for 'smart drone for surveillance and reducing human elephant conflicts.'
Inventor(s) include Yeshwanth Raj C; Akkash T N; Jeevesh B; and Sathyaraj P.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Human-Elephant Conflicts (HEC) has become a major socio-environmental issue in India, where human settlements increasingly overlap with elephant habitats. Frequent elephant intrusions into villages and farmlands cause severe crop losses, property damage, and fatalities, while community retaliation threatens elephant survival and ecological balance. Traditional countermeasures like electric fencing, firecrackers, and human patrols involve high risk, maintenance issues, and limited coverage. The proposed solution is a drone-based smart surveillance and deterrence system to reduce humanelephant conflict in high-risk zones. The system uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with high- resolution cameras for elephant detection, equipped with a tranquilizer darting unit, non-intrusive acoustic deterrents (bee-like sounds), and a cloud-based mobile/desktop application for real-time monitoring and alerts. The drones drive elephants back into forests, minimizing conflict with low human intervention, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. The system also sends SMS/email alerts to local village people and supports UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on biodiversity, innovation, and sustainable actions."
