MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541121114 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 3, 2025, for 'smart cut off for curious kids(for table fan).'

Inventor(s) include Dr. K. P. Indira; Dr. T. Sathish; and Dr Ramya Mohan.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Table fans are common appliances in households and child-care environments that pose serious safety risks to young children due to their rotating blades and accessible structure. Curious and prying children often approach these fans out of fascination, ignorance of the potential danger. Traditional table fans are lacking in intelligent safety features to prevent accidental contact. This device introduces a smart, sensor-based safety mechanism- Smart Cutoff for Curious Kids- designed especially to address this issue. This proposed system combines proximity detection technology with an automated control unit. When a child's hand or face is detected near the blades- within a pre-defined hazardous zone-the system activates a safety response. With the help of an infrared (IR) sensor or an ultrasonic sensor, the presence of an object within a critical distance triggers a microcontroller (such as an Arduino or ESP32). The controller immediately deactivates the fan via a relay module, by cutting off power supply. Also simultaneously, an audio alert (buzzer or recorded voice message) is activated to warn the child and alert supervising adults. This intelligent safety mechanism device ensures real-time prevention of accidents, by offering a protective layer between the child and the moving fan. The system can be configured to reset automatically or require manual reactivation for more added safety. This design is cost-effective, energy-efficient, and also can be easily retrofitted to most standard table fans. With additional features such as voice alerts and optional mobile notifications, this system offers a modem, reliable solution to improve child safety in domestic and educational settings. By leveraging the basic components and simple control logic, this device demonstrates how smart technology can be used to safeguard children from everyday electrical hazards, making homes and classrooms safer for the youngest members of society."
