MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641001495 A) filed by Meenakshi Academy Of Higher Education and Research; and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College And Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 6, for 'smart colorimetric radiation dosimetry badge with real-time visual and digital exposure feedback.'
Inventor(s) include Dr Arthi Sri A. S.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a wearable, passive colorimetric radiation dosimetry badge for real-time monitoring of low-dose ionizing radiation exposure in dental and medical radiology environments. The badge comprises a compact clip-on housing enclosing a photochromic polymeric film formed from a polymethyl-methacrylate or polycarbonate matrix containing microencapsulated leuco dye molecules. A UV-blocking transparent cover is positioned over the film to prevent activation by non-ionizing ultraviolet radiation while permitting transmission of X-ray and gamma radiation. Upon cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation, the film undergoes irreversible oxidative color transformation, producing distinct permanent color states corresponding to predefined absorbed dose ranges up to 0.6 mSv, thereby providing immediate visual indication of occupational exposure. The badge further includes an optional digital interface in the form of a QR code or NFC tag for displaying exposure information and enabling exposure logging. The invention provides a low-cost, power-free, and sensitive dosimetry solution delivering instant visual and digital feedback for enhanced radiation safety compliance."
