The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a self-illuminated vaginal speculum for use in obstetric and gynaecological examinations. The device is based on a Sims-type speculum and incorporates a centrally positioned LED light source integrated into the shaft, powered by a rechargeable or disposable battery module housed within the handle. This built-in illumination eliminates the dependence on external light, thereby ensuring direct, uniform visualization of the cervix and vaginal walls. The device is constructed from biocompatible, non-toxic, and sterilizable materials, allowing repeated clinical use. By improving visibility, it reduces examination time, enhances patient comfort, and increases clinician efficiency. The invention is cost-effective, portable, and user-friendly, making it suitable for tertiary centres as well as primary and low-resource healthcare settings. Applications include routine pelvic examinations, cervical cancer screening, Pap smears, intrauterine device procedures, and minor gynaecological interventions, addressing the limitations of traditional and commercially available illuminated speculums."
