MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641001534 A) filed by Srm Institute Of Science And Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 7, for 'self-filling road pothole repair capsule.'
Inventor(s) include Pavithran E; Elavenil Nambi P; Vignesh P; Ricky Charles A; Bhaskar Annamalai; Dr. R. Suthan; and P. Loganathan.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This project proposes an innovative, eco-friendly solution to road pothole problems by designing a self-filling capsule that uses rainwater-activated hydrophilic expansion material. Encased in a biodegradable shell, the capsule expands upon absorbing rainwater, filling the pothole and then hardening with a binder-filler mixture. This solution is cost-effective, requires no external power or labor, and ensures longer-lasting repairs, especially during monsoons. The project involves material testing, 3D modeling, field simulations, and cost analysis to validate feasibility."
