MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641061666 A) filed by Selvaprabhu Selvakumar; Dr. Nixon Poulose; and Dr. S. N Kumar, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, on May 14, for 'self-cleaning water filter with automated backwash.'
Inventor(s) include Johan John Rajeev; Joyal K Thomas; Albin K Binu; Edwin K Anil; Matthew Joseph; Nandana Krishna; Dr. Nixon Poulose; and Dr. S. N Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The current invention is a self-cleaning water filtration system that requires little operator involvement to produce effective and long-lasting water purification. For the efficient removal of suspended particles, sediments, and organic contaminants, the system consists of a filtration unit built with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipework coupled with multi-stage filter media, such as gravel, sand, and activated carbon. An automated backwash system that is set up to regularly reverse the water flow through the filtration media when blockage or sediment accumulation is detected, or after a predetermined interval, is a crucial component of the innovation. The filtration efficiency is restored without the need for manual cleaning due to this reverse flow's dislodging and expulsion of trapped contaminants. The suggested solution increases operational dependability, lowers maintenance needs, and prolongs the filter media's service life. The design is also affordable, energy-efficient, and appropriate for use in rural, educational, and home settings. Thus, the idea offers a workable and expandable option for ongoing access to safe and clean water."
