MUMBAI, India, April 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641019735 A) filed by Kalasalingam Academy Of Research And Education, Srivilliputtur Virudhnagar, Tamil Nadu, on Feb. 20, for 'safety device for school bus to detect children's limb extension outside the window.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. S. Shasi Anand; and Dr. P. Jayakumar.
The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The titled invention discloses a safety device for school buses to prevent injuries caused due to limb extension outside bus windows. The system comprises a fixture clamp (1) with fastening holes (2) mounted on the exterior of the bus prior to the first I 0 window. A retrofit IR transmitting and receiving sensor (3) module projects pulses along the longitudinal exterior of the bus. Microcontroller (4) records the transmission and reception time of the pulses to calculate time-of-flight and determine the distance to the obstruction. When a child extends a limb outside a window, the interruption of the IR beam is detected, and the calculated obstruction distance is correlated with pre- 15 stored window position mapping data to accurately identify the specific window location. The system automatically generates a visual alert on the LCD monitor (7) near the driver and activates an audible warning tone for immediate corrective action."
