Inventor(s) include S. Kanimozhi; and Dr. G. Sumathy.

The application for the patent was published on Sept. 12, under issue no. 37/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Protective Effect Of Methanolic Extract Of Sphaeranthus Amaranthoides On The Nicotine Induced Testicular Damages In Adult Wistar Albino Rats Nicotine is the harmful component present in Tobacco smoke that is swiftly and heavily. Spermatogenesis is known to be affected by nicotine in a dose-dependent manner.Nicotine disturbs the morphology of the testis which also result in secretory malfunction of the Leydig cells. With the aim to rule out the Protective effects of methanolic extract of Sphaeranthus amaranthoides on nicotine induced testicular damages in adult wistar albino rats. Phytochemical and GCMS analysis were done to evaluate the properties of the plant. Acute and sub-acute toxicity studies were done. Then animals were divided into 4 groups and the two different doses of the drug were administered orally along with 0.4mg of Nicotine given intra peritoneally for 49 days. The Hormone levels and weight of the animals were detected in a regular basis. After the treatment period the animals were sacrificed and testis was removed and weighed. After tissue processing the testicular tissue was subjected to H&E staining and Masson's Trichrome staining and examined under microscope. The sections were subjected to histomorphometric analysis and Immunohistochemical analysis. From the toxicity study MESA was proved to be safe for oral administration. MESA improved the Testosterone, Follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels and reduced the Prolactin levels and reversed all the morphological damages and histomorphometric changes. Both doses of MESA were effective in mitigating nicotine-induced damages Thus, it could be concluded that the Methanolic extract of Sphaeranthus amaranthoides will have promising protective and preventive effects on the damages caused by nicotine in the testis of Adult Wistar albino rats."
