MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511113519 A) filed by Chitkara University; and Chitkara Innovation Incubator Foundation, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, on Nov. 18, 2025, for 'process for producing high molecular weight polylactic acid (pla) using direct polycondensation and solid-state polymerization.'
Inventor(s) include Dr Sukhvir Kaur; Rakshit Sharma; and Dr. Nitin Verma.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 9, under issue no. 02/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The invention provides a sustainable process for producing high molecular weight polylactic acid (PLA) using renewable biomass-derived lactic acid through a combined direct polycondensation and solid-state polymerization (SSP) technique. The process eliminates toxic catalysts and complex lactide purification, achieving molecular weights above 200,000 g/mol with superior mechanical, thermal, and optical properties. The resulting PLA exhibits high strength, biodegradability, and stability, making it suitable for food packaging, biomedical devices, and 3D printing, offering an eco-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastics."
