MUMBAI, India, June 16 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611055576 A) filed by Chitkara University, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, on April 30, for 'prebiotic-enriched tamarind seed-derived biopolymeric compositions for gastrointestinal adsorption and removal of microplastics.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Neha Kanojia; Dr. Komal Thapa; and Mr. Jatin Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on June 5, under issue no. 23/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a prebiotic-enriched biopolymeric composition derived from tamarind seeds for gastrointestinal adsorption and removal of microplastics. The composition comprises tamarind seed polysaccharides and prebiotic components forming an ingestible adsorbent matrix. The composition binds microplastic particles within the intestinal tract through physical and electrostatic interactions and facilitates elimination via fecal excretion. The composition exhibits selective adsorption, minimal interaction with nutrients, and stability under storage conditions, thereby providing a safe and effective approach for ingestion-based microplastic removal."
